Early Hubley Cast-Iron Limousine Toy Car, Model 8L, c.1920s
An appealing survivor from the golden age of American toy making, this Hubley cast-iron limousine, Model 8L, dates to the 1910s–1920s. Cast in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, this early example features paneled coach-style bodywork, open windows, and six-spoke wheels showing remnants of their original yellow paint.
This version represents Hubley’s early, non-louvered hood design — a feature distinguishing it from the later retooled models of the 1920s. Constructed in two solid cast-iron halves joined by a single side screw, it embodies the rugged craftsmanship that made Hubley toys a household name. The piece comes with a handwritten collector’s tag reading “Hubley Limo 8L 1209-48” and previous owner’s documentation: Gott Auct #31 – $301, adding a traceable note of provenance.
Condition
Good overall condition, showing age-appropriate wear. Paint appears original, with expected surface losses, oxidation, and playwear consistent with age. Wheels turn freely; no major cracks or repairs noted. Retains a pleasing, honest patina that displays beautifully.
