Hopi Kachina Figure – Hand Carved & Painted, 17¼ Inches
Hand-carved and painted Hopi kachina figure, likely mid-20th century, carved from traditional cottonwood root. The tall cylindrical form is decorated with bold geometric and symbolic motifs in turquoise, red, green, black, and white pigments, representing a stylized spirit figure with painted facial features and a domed headdress topped by four carved feathers. The simplified form and linear patterning reflect the artistry and cultural symbolism of Hopi katsinam, carved to embody and honor spiritual beings central to Hopi belief.
Unsigned, this piece demonstrates both fine craftsmanship and the influence of later 20th-century Hopi carving traditions, where natural materials and stylized detail were adapted for collectors and art markets. A distinctive and meaningful example of Native Southwest woodcarving.
Condition
Good overall condition with light age wear. One feather shows an old repair; otherwise no remarkable damage.
