Description

Raymond Johnson Ne Clah He Eagle Dancer Gouache

Original gouache painting by Navajo artist Raymond Johnson, also known as “Ne Clah He,” depicting a stylized ceremonial eagle dancer. The figure is shown in profile wearing a bird-form headdress and an expansive feathered bustle and wing-like garment, symbolizing avian transformation and spiritual connection. Rendered in bold, flat color fields against a warm ochre ground, the composition reflects a Yei-inspired ceremonial theme interpreted through a modern Southwestern aesthetic. Signed lower right “Ne Clah He.” Presented matted and unframed.

Artist Biography:
Raymond Johnson (Ne Clah He) was a 20th-century Diné/Navajo artist known for his depictions of ceremonial dancers, spiritual figures, and scenes of Navajo life. Working primarily in gouache on paper, he developed a distinctive style characterized by strong color planes, rhythmic forms, and clean linework. He is referenced in Clara Lee Tanner’s Southwest Indian Painting and exhibited in the 1969 Scottsdale show. Johnson also contributed illustrations to Navajo Community College Press publications in the early 1970s.
