Description

Clara Mac Gowan “St. Basil’s” Piraeus Greece Print

“St. Basil’s – Piraeus, Greece” by Clara Mac Gowan, a mid-20th century decorative print depicting a stylized Greek harbor village. The composition features a domed church and simplified coastal architecture, rendered in a loose, modernist watercolor style with layered washes and textured brush effects. The palette—soft blues, sandy neutrals, muted greens, and accents of red—is characteristic of travel-inspired prints popular in the 1950s–1970s.

Clara Mac Gowan appears to have produced decorative travel and architectural scenes, often focusing on European locales. Works like this were commonly sold as high-quality prints rather than original watercolors, frequently signed in-plate (as appears likely here) and framed for interior décor. This example is titled along the lower margin and signed lower right.

Housed in a gold-tone frame with linen mat and UV protective glass, it presents as a classic mid-century wall piece suited for coastal, modern, or vintage-inspired interiors.

Condition:
In good condition overall, with a minor stain to the matting and some finish loss to the frame. The print itself remains clean and displays well behind UV protective glass.

Dimensions:
Overall: 20 1/8 x 29 3/4 x 1 1/2 inches
Visible: 14 1/4 x 23 3/4 inches
