Sunbeam T-9 Streamline Moderne Chrome Toaster, c. 1940s

A pure expression of Streamline Moderne in a domestic appliance — the Sunbeam T-9 reduces the morning toaster to a single mirrored arc, its dome rising from a Bakelite plinth like a chromed Zephyr locomotive parked on the kitchen counter. Etched fan motifs and parallel speed lines sweep across both flanks, tracing the same aerodynamic vocabulary that defined the Chrysler Building elevators and the Burlington railcars of the period. The convex chrome is so deeply polished it functions as a fisheye mirror, pulling the entire room into its curve.

Underside plate reads "Model T-9, Made in United States America, Sunbeam Corporation, Chicago USA / Toronto Canada," with patent dates extending to 1942–45. Operational toggle marked "Pops Toast Up / Keeps Toast Warm" with a light/dark adjustment wheel at the base, flanked by Bakelite end caps signed "Sunbeam." Tested and fully functional — eighty years on, it still pops the toast up.

CONDITION

Good condition and fully operational per consignor testing. Chrome retains a strong reflective polish with light surface scratches and scuffs throughout consistent with decades of kitchen use, and minor oxidation spotting visible on the underside plate. Bakelite base and end caps are intact with no cracks observed.
