Chinese Carved Hardwood Four-Part Segmented Quarter-Round Stools
A clever and beautifully executed set of four matched quarter-round stools or display stands in carved hardwood that can be arranged together into a full circle or used individually as standalone stools, stands, or plant plinths. Each wedge-shaped piece carries a paneled top within a molded edge, a deeply pierced and carved grapevine apron trailing fruit clusters and leaves, and a pair of cabriole legs descending to bold ball-and-claw feet. The carving runs from the knee blocks down the leg fronts, with grape bunches, scrolling tendrils, and curling leaves rendered crisply in the round.
The form draws on late-Qing and Republic-period Chinese export furniture made for Western parlors, blending European cabriole and ball-and-claw vocabulary with Chinese carving traditions. The four-piece configuration is practical and flexible — use them individually as display plinths or extra seating, or arrange all four into a circle as a dramatic low grouping. The grape-and-vine motif carries traditional Chinese symbolism of abundance and fertility, executed here with the dense, sculptural relief these workshops were known for.
CONDITION
Very Good overall. Light finish wear throughout consistent with age and gentle use. Carving remains crisp; joinery is tight and the segments align cleanly when arranged together.
