Artist Biography:

David Gilstein, an esteemed graduate from the University of Rhode Island (1971-1976), was under the tutelage of the notable photographer and professor Bart Parker. Influenced by the works of Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind, Gilly’s photographic journey began to take shape, melding technical precision with a creative vision.

Launching his career with a photography studio in Providence in 1979, Gilly ventured into both commercial and fine arts. His tenure as Director of Photography at Blazing Graphics (1985-1996) saw him collaborate on significant commercial publications for major companies, creating images that combined artistic concepts with corporate needs.

David Gilstein's travels from 1990 to 2005 on corporate-sponsored assignments brought his lens to a global audience, capturing diverse subjects and vistas. Alongside his wife, artist Renee O’Gara, he has operated the Charlestown Gallery since 2005, a venue renowned for showcasing premier artists and their work. The couple also manages their commercial photography business from the Gilstein Photography Studio in Charlestown, active from 1997 to the present day.

While Gilly's commercial work is characterized by its sharp detail and technical mastery, his personal art—particularly in painting—embraces the spontaneity and liberation of abstraction. His career is dotted with awards and recognitions, but perhaps more importantly, it has been enriched by the numerous talented individuals he has worked and collaborated with, always nurturing his passion for art.
