Pair of 1940s Steel Spring Lawn Chairs
Several American companies made steel lawn chairs with shell-shaped backs in the middle of the 20th century, all slightly different. These are Calumet “Shellback” steel lawn chairs, made in Hammond Indiana by Calumet Chairs from 1939 to 1960. The early versions, like these two chairs, featured a one-piece tubular frame that was phased out after WWII. These metal chairs are comfortable and sound and could be stripped and repainted. But the current patina of multiple old coats of paint adds a lot of character, with several shades of red, and very tiny fragments of the original turquoise peeking out here and there.
