Description

Jones & Bixler “Peerless” Cast Iron Racer with Driver, c.1908–1912

A striking early 20th-century cast-iron “Peerless” racer by Jones & Bixler, Freemansburg, Pennsylvania, circa 1908–1912. Finished in original silver paint with bold red spoked wheels, this model proudly bears embossed “PEERLESS” lettering across the hood—an homage to the legendary Peerless Motor Company’s early race cars. The removable driver figure, cast in matching silvered iron, completes the authentic early motoring aesthetic.

Jones & Bixler was among the pioneering American toy foundries bridging the Victorian and automotive eras. Their “Peerless Racer” captured the excitement of the new century’s speed machines—lean, riveted, and ready to roar—scaled down for play. Produced in two sizes, this 6-inch example represents the smaller, rarer form. Its sculpted lines and mechanical precision hint at the craftsmanship that helped Jones & Bixler toys rival those of Hubley and Kenton.

Accompanied by an archival string tag noting provenance from Bertola Auction ‘09 and Lot 770 at the Gott Auction, where it was previously valued at $1200. A superb piece of early American toy history that blends artistry, nostalgia, and mechanical romance.
