Hubley Cast-Iron Airplane No. 2197 — Orange & Nickel Finish, Circa 1930s
Take flight with a true classic of the golden age of American toys! This cast-iron airplane, marked “2197” and “3”, was produced by the Hubley Manufacturing Company of Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the 1930s—an era when toy airplanes captured the nation’s fascination with aviation pioneers like Lindbergh and Earhart.
Crafted in solid cast iron with a nickel-finished nose and wings and vivid orange fuselage, this low-wing single-seater is a perfect example of Hubley’s early streamlined design language. The airplane rolls on red cast-iron wheels mounted to a steel axle, showcasing both the weight and durability that made Hubley toys so beloved. Originally sold for just a few cents, these hand-painted models now stand as enduring symbols of Depression-era ingenuity and imagination.
Condition:
In good antique condition with original paint showing age-consistent chipping and oxidation. The propeller is missing, and the wheels show light wear from use, yet the structure remains strong and stable with no cracks or repairs. A wonderfully honest example of a 1930s Hubley flyer.
