A rare and delightful survivor from America’s industrial toy era, this Hubley “Wonder” cast iron cement mixer (marked Hubley & Wonder, casting No. 182) dates to around 1930, when Hubley Manufacturing of Lancaster, Pennsylvania was at its creative peak. Crafted entirely from cast iron and finished in its original red-orange paint, this miniature marvel features a nickel-plated rotating drum embossed “WONDER,” and rides on solid iron wheels with functional realism.
The “Wonder” name wasn’t a whim — it connects directly to the Wonder Concrete Mixer Company of Waterloo, Iowa, whose full-sized machines were fixtures on early 20th-century job sites. Hubley cleverly partnered (or borrowed the likeness) to produce a toy version that celebrated the machinery shaping modern America. The raised “W” shield on the motor housing and numbered underside reflect Hubley’s meticulous pattern casting techniques of the prewar period.
Condition:
Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear and scattered paint loss. The original paint remains visible, showing authentic patina and oxidation to the wheels and drum. Drum rotates smoothly. No structural damage or modern repaint detected. Displays beautifully with honest character and period appeal.
