Hubley Cast Iron No. 1 Race Car, Marked 1854B 2B — 8"
Born in the golden era of speed, this Hubley cast iron No. 1 racer captures the spirit of 1930s American racing toys. Cast from solid iron and stamped “1854B 2B Hubley” beneath, this model was part of Hubley’s celebrated line of toy automobiles made in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a company renowned for turning the thrill of modern machinery into miniature works of art.
The streamlined “No. 1” racer was directly inspired by the Indy-style open-wheel race cars of its day — long hoods, exposed wheels, and a single molded driver gripping the wheel. It evokes the fascination children (and adults) had with speed, mechanical innovation, and the new world of motor sport.
Condition:
Good overall condition with signs of age and restoration. Paint appears reapplied, smoother and brighter than factory tone, covering some minor casting wear. Tires are heavily worn and detach easily, and metal axles show light oxidation. Markings are legible on the underside. A sturdy, handsome example that displays beautifully while showing clear evidence of its long life.
Dimensions:
Overall: 3.2" H × 3.15" W × 8" L
Weight: 21.4 oz
Collector’s Note:
Hubley Manufacturing Co. (founded 1894) became one of America’s premier makers of cast-iron toys, producing cars, airplanes, and motorcycles that mirrored real-world designs. Their 1930s racers reflected the glamour of Indianapolis 500-era cars, complete with elongated bonnets, finned tails, and raised engine detailing.
