Willets Belleek Dragon Handle Porcelain Ewer – c. 1880
This antique Willets Belleek porcelain ewer, dating to circa 1880, is a stunning example of American Belleek craftsmanship. Measuring 11.25" tall, 6" wide, and 4.5" deep, it features a luxurious cream-colored glaze and an ornately sculpted dragon handle, a dramatic and rare decorative element. The scalloped rim enhances its refined silhouette, showcasing the artistic influences of late 19th-century porcelain design.
What is American Belleek?
American Belleek porcelain emerged in the late 19th century as an adaptation of the famous Irish Belleek pottery, known for its thin, translucent body, pearl-like glaze, and refined craftsmanship. While Irish Belleek originated in County Fermanagh, Ireland, American potteries—such as Willets Manufacturing Company of Trenton, New Jersey—began producing their own versions using similar techniques but with distinctive shapes and decorative elements, often catering to the tastes of the American market. Willets Belleek was one of the most prestigious of these manufacturers, operating from 1879 to 1909, and is highly regarded by collectors today.
The green Willets Belleek mark on the underside of this ewer confirms its authenticity. This mark was used between 1880 and 1909, identifying it as a genuine piece from this distinguished maker.
