This expressive Hopi Watermelon Clown (Koshare) Katsina is a mixed-media ceremonial carving by IMSB, signed and titled “Watermelon Clown” on the underside. Hand-carved from wood and meticulously hand-painted, the figure features bold black-and-white stripes, a vibrant red headband, and a dramatic horned headdress.

Dressed in natural suede, fur-trimmed moccasins, and adorned with cowrie shells, cones, and cord, the figure carries a bundle of corn husks and a painted watermelon—a playful nod to the Koshare’s humorous role in Hopi tradition. The doll stands on a natural wood base and incorporates both cultural symbolism and tactile craftsmanship through the use of leather, shells, corn husk, yarn, and synthetic hair.
