Description

Lot: Pair of Antique Hand-Carved Waterfowl Decoys - Black Duck & Canada Goose

A matched pair of early 20th-century antique waterfowl decoys, both hand-carved and painted, each with inset glass eyes and distinctive signs of use from their sporting pasts. This duo includes:

  • Black Duck Decoy: Carved from a single block of wood with bold yellow glass eyes and a subtly rounded form. It features comb-textured feathering beneath its aged matte black painted surface. Displays traditional American decoy aesthetics with field-worn authenticity.

    • Size: 7"H x 7"W x 14"D

  • Canada Goose Decoy: Larger in scale and weightier at 5 lbs, this goose features deeply incised feather carving, combed and stippled paintwork in muted natural tones, and a separately attached neck. Realistic and robust, this decoy has clearly seen use in waterfowl hunting settings.

    • Size: 11"H x 8.75"W x 23"D

Both decoys exhibit visible wear and weathering, with paint loss, surface scuffs, and signs of ballast wear consistent with their utilitarian past. The goose decoy has an old neck repair that remains structurally sound, while the black duck has a stable stress crack at the neck. Each piece retains its folk art charm and historical character, ideal for display or collection.

Condition:

  • Black Duck: Good condition; age-appropriate finish wear and chipping, stable crack at neck, solid single-block construction.

  • Canada Goose: Fair condition; visible paint loss, working wear, old repair to neck joint, structurally stable.
