Western Electric 554 Rotary Wall Phone — Black, 1966
This is an original Western Electric Model 554 rotary wall telephone, produced in September 1966 for the Bell System. A true icon of mid-century utility design, the 554 was introduced in the 1950s and became a staple in homes and businesses throughout the U.S. This unit features the signature black Bakelite housing, rotary dial with alphanumeric labeling, and chrome switch hooks. The backplate is stamped "A/B 554 9-66," indicating its date of manufacture.
Fitted with the classic G-series handset, marked “Bell System / Made by Western Electric,” this phone is both collectible and display-worthy. It retains its original 70-inch coiled cord, though the insulation shows wear and fraying. Unmodified and untested, this piece would suit restoration or as a striking decorative object with authentic vintage character.
Condition:
Good condition with expected age-related wear. The housing shows moderate surface scuffs and adhesive residue. The cord has damaged insulation and exposed wiring. The unit is untested and sold as-is. A fair candidate for display or restoration.
Size:
- 10"H X 5 1/2"W X 6"D
- Cord Length: 70"
The Model 554's widespread adoption made it an iconic piece of mid-20th-century communication technology. Its design influenced subsequent telephone models and remains a symbol of the era's industrial design aesthetics.
