Tlaquepaque Mexican Folk Art Dishes – Hand-Painted Campesino Scenes (2)
This expressive pair of hand-painted Mexican oval dishes is a beautiful example of mid-20th century Tlaquepaque folk pottery, crafted from red terracotta clay and glazed in vibrant natural tones. Each dish is adorned with classic narrative scenes—a campesino in sombrero beside a cactus and gourd, and a tent set amid a desert nopales landscape—motifs closely associated with Tlaquepaque’s decorative tradition.
The scalloped rims are highlighted with alternating painted colors and dotted borders, a signature feature of pottery from the Jalisco region. These pieces blend decorative and functional appeal, embodying the storytelling spirit that made Tlaquepaque a center for Mexican ceramic art in the 1930s–1950s. Ideal as wall hangings, serving pieces, or collectible folkware.
Condition
Good condition overall with visible surface scuffing and signs of age-related use. Glaze wear, brushstroke imperfections, and minor rim wear are consistent with traditional, hand-crafted pottery from this period. No major structural damage noted.
