Description

Set of 5 Tonalá Mexican Nesting Bowls — Hand Thrown & Painted

Striking set of five hand-thrown and hand-painted terracotta nesting bowls, attributed to the Tonalá pottery tradition of Jalisco, Mexico. Likely dating to the mid-20th century, each bowl is decorated in the classic bruñido (burnished) style, featuring polished surfaces with no glaze and vivid floral motifs in natural tones of green, blue, ivory, and terracotta.

Unmarked and entirely handmade, these bowls showcase the signature Tonalá folk art style—particularly the stylized sunburst and flower designs often seen in this regional tradition. The interiors are smooth and warmly toned, while the exteriors burst with vibrant hand-painted detail. Pieces nest neatly and vary in size, making them as functional as they are decorative.

Rooted in centuries of artisanal craft, this set reflects the enduring legacy of Mexican ceramics and would make a bold statement in any folk art, rustic, or vintage kitchen collection.

Condition:
In good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. Some bowls show light scuffing, small nicks, and minor surface wear from use. One bowl has a small chip on the painted exterior. All imperfections are consistent with handmade pottery and do not detract from the overall appeal. Please review photos for specific details.
