Description

1974 Triumph TR6 – Yellow over Chestnut Brown

This 1974 Triumph TR6 is a comprehensively restored example of the classic British roadster, finished in Mimosa Yellow (paint code 94) over a Chestnut Brown leather interior. Power comes from a numbers-matching 2.5-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Approximately 14,484 miles have been added since the restoration was completed, and the five-digit odometer reflects this mileage. The car is said to be in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition, benefitting from careful maintenance and indoor storage.

Key equipment on this TR6 includes a body-color removable hardtop, a tan soft top, and a tonneau cover, all in good condition. Chrome 72-spoke wire wheels are fitted, wearing P205/70R15 Toyo Extensa A/S tires (DOT CXYT) with no signs of dry rot. Performance-minded modifications have been added, such as roller rockers, a performance camshaft, upgraded dual carburetors, and a reversion to an earlier 1969-style dash-mounted ignition switch. Polished engine components give the engine bay a show-quality look. This TR6 retains its original identification tags (matching numbers across plates) and is offered with a clean New Mexico title in the seller’s name.

Exterior

The exterior of this TR6 presents beautifully in its factory-correct Mimosa Yellow finish. The paintwork shines with a deep gloss, indicating quality workmanship from the restoration. Body panels exhibit proper fitment, and no significant blemishes or rust issues are noted. Bright chrome bumpers, door handles, and trim accents complement the yellow paint, all of which appear in excellent condition.

Included with the car is a removable hardtop painted to match the body, as well as a tan soft top that stows under a boot cover when not in use. Both the hardtop and soft top are well-preserved; the soft top’s vinyl and clear plastic windows show minimal wear. A tonneau cover is also provided, allowing the cabin to be covered when the car is parked with the top down. All weather seals and rubber trim are in good shape, contributing to a tight fit for both the soft top and hardtop.

This TR6 rides on chrome 72-spoke wire wheels secured with knock-off spinners, adding a touch of period style. The wheels are wrapped in Toyo Extensa A/S all-season tires sized P205/70R15, which have ample tread and no dry rot. The combination of fresh tires and properly balanced wire wheels contributes to a smooth ride at highway speeds.

Interior

The cabin is trimmed in Chestnut Brown leather, creating an attractive contrast with the Mimosa Yellow exterior. The seats, door panels, and carpeting were reupholstered during the restoration and remain in excellent condition, showing only minor wear. The bucket seats are supportive and feature fresh foam and leather upholstery that has been well cared-for. Matching brown carpeting lines the floors and rear parcel shelf, protected by Triumph-branded floor mats.

A wood-grain dashboard houses the Smiths gauges and switchgear. All instrumentation – including the 140-mph speedometer, tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and voltage – is fully functional, with no electrical issues reported. The three-spoke steering wheel fronts the clear gauges and provides a classic driving feel. Notably, the ignition has been relocated to the dashboard, utilizing a 1969-style dash-mounted ignition switch in place of the later steering column-mounted key. This retro modification not only adds a vintage touch but also functions seamlessly with the electrical system.

Interior amenities include a heater/defroster for comfortable cruising on cooler days. An accessory center armrest (included with the car) can be fitted for added comfort on long drives. The dash padding, door caps, and interior trim pieces are all in great shape - there is a taped portion of dash below the volt meter and there is an imperfection on the padding on the driver door.  Overall, the interior reflects a great-quality presentation while remaining fully functional for driving.

Engine & Mechanical

The 2.5-liter inline-6 under the hood is the original, numbers-matching engine for this TR6. It was factory rated at approximately 101 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque. As part of the restoration and subsequent upgrades, the engine received roller rocker arms and a performance camshaft, improving valvetrain efficiency and power delivery. Fueling is handled by dual performance carburetors (in place of the stock Zenith-Stromberg units), which are tuned for crisp throttle response. The engine breathes through a stock-style exhaust, and polished aluminum components (such as the valve cover and carburetor dashpots) lend a show-worthy shine in the engine bay. All hoses, belts, and wiring appear in excellent order, and there are no signs of fluid leaks.

The motor starts easily and settles into a smooth idle with a throaty six-cylinder exhaust note. It pulls strongly through the rev range and has proven long-distance capable, running cool and steady on extended drives. The four-speed manual gearbox shifts confidently through all gears, and the clutch engages positively with no slipping.

Braking is handled by power-assisted front disc brakes and rear drums, providing reliable stopping power. The fully independent suspension (front and rear) was a hallmark of the TR6’s design, and on this example it remains in excellent condition. The car tracks straight with a tight steering feel, and the suspension is firm yet compliant, free of any unwanted noises. All electrical components (lighting, wipers, horn, etc.) are operational, and the car is said to be free of electrical gremlins. This TR6 is reportedly turn-key and ready for enjoyment, whether on a twisty backroad or at a local British car show.
