Federal Eagle Convex Mirror — Gilt & Red, ca. 1821
This early 19th-century American Federal-style convex wall mirror features a boldly carved giltwood eagle crest, symbolizing national pride. The circular frame is painted in deep red with gilt foliate and beaded detailing, characteristic of patriotic neoclassical motifs popular in the post-Revolutionary period. The reverse of the mirror retains its original wooden backing, lined with printed paper fragments from A Narrative of the Campaigns of the British Army at Washington and New Orleans by George Robert Gleig, published in 1821. This detail offers rare documentary context, supporting the mirror's period authenticity. This richly detailed piece showcases early American symbolic ornamentation and period-accurate construction, making it a desirable accent for collectors of historical Americana.
Condition
In good condition with age-appropriate wear. Exhibits several chips to the painted and gilt finish throughout, along with natural wood splits and surface losses consistent with age. Minor flaking and craquelure are visible, especially around the eagle crest and frame edges. Structurally sound and visually compelling, with honest signs of historic use.
