Peruvian Storyteller Gourds — Etched Folk Art Pair
This is a charming pair of Peruvian storyteller gourds (mates burilados), each meticulously hand-carved and burned with narrative folk scenes. One gourd features dancing figures in traditional attire, while the other depicts a stylized procession of animals, likely llamas or alpacas, under floral canopies. Crafted from natural calabash gourds, the vessels are decorated using traditional burilado (engraving) and pyrography techniques, producing rich contrast and fine detail in warm natural tones. These gourd vessels represent a time-honored Andean craft dating back to pre-Columbian cultures, and are used to preserve oral traditions and depict scenes of daily and ceremonial life. The distinctive star-shaped lids echo solar symbolism and regional motifs. This pair makes a meaningful addition to any folk art collection or ethnographic display.
Condition
In excellent, like-new condition. No visible cracks, chips, or remarkable wear. The etched designs are crisp, and the surfaces are well-preserved throughout.
