Description

1981 Blackware Canteen by R. Diane Martinez — Signed, Beaded Strap

Offered is a handcrafted black-on-black pottery canteen by R. Diane Martinez, signed and dated 1981. This rounded vessel features matte geometric motifs against a polished black background, a style reminiscent of traditional Pueblo pottery. The canteen includes dual side lugs for hanging and retains its original leather strap adorned with multicolored wooden beads in red, ochre, and green.

Martinez, a member of the Tarahumara tribe, has been creating unique pottery pieces since the late 1970s. Her work is entirely hand-made and freehand painted, reflecting New Mexico's rich beauty and heritage. She has won first place at the New Mexico State Fair for 34 consecutive years, and her pieces are collected worldwide and displayed in museums throughout the country.

Condition

In good condition overall, with minor surface scuffing and light wear consistent with age. Some feathering to the etched decoration is visible upon close inspection. The leather hanger and wooden beads remain intact. See photos for complete detail.
