Don Schairer - 'Seen Better Days' Original 1972 Watercolor
Original 1972 watercolor 'Seen Better Days' by acclaimed American artist Don Schairer. A striking portrayal of a weathered rural structure set against a muted mountain backdrop, this piece exemplifies Schairer's regionalist approach and mastery of light and texture. The subject—a sagging barn in late afternoon light—evokes themes of resilience and decay with poignant elegance.
Signed and dated in the lower right (“Don Schairer ‘72”) and titled on the verso with catalog number “#288,” the piece is framed under glass in a wood frame with linen matting. Rich in nostalgic tone and visual depth, this artwork reflects the artist’s deep connection to the American landscape and his technical fluency in watercolor.
A compelling acquisition for collectors of vintage Americana, Western art, or mid-20th-century watercolor painting.
About the Artist: Don Schairer
Don Schairer is a respected American watercolorist celebrated for his expressive depictions of the American Southwest. Originally from Pennsylvania, Schairer studied at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles before settling in Sedona, Arizona, in 1974. His work draws from the visual poetry of fading structures, dusty fields, and high desert light—capturing both architectural form and emotional atmosphere.
Influenced by cowboy artist Gary Snidow, Schairer developed a unique visual language rooted in place and memory. Beyond his personal practice, he has taught at the Sedona Arts Center and led international workshops in Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. As an officer of the Northern Arizona Watercolor Society, he has played an important role in fostering regional watercolor traditions.
His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and remains highly regarded by collectors seeking authentic, story-rich Americana.
