L.C. Groves 1993 Poppy Field Photo — Organ Mountains, Signed, Framed

This stunning 1993 photograph by L.C. Groves captures a rare burst of color across the desert floor, where golden poppies bloom beneath the dramatic silhouette of the Organ Mountains. Taken at dawn or dusk, the cool lighting emphasizes the delicate contrast between the warm flowers and the deep purples and blues of the encroaching evening. Groves, renowned for his poetic depictions of the New Mexico landscape, blends flora and geology here to create a composition that is both serene and vibrant.

The work is presented in a rich carved wood frame with deep navy matting and is signed and dated “L.C. Groves © 1993” in the lower right. A memorable image that highlights the seasonal beauty of the Southwest, perfect for collectors of regional photography or wildflower art.

About the Artist: L.C. Groves (1919–1995)
L.C. Groves was a renowned Southwestern photographer based in southern New Mexico, celebrated for his vivid and contemplative depictions of desert landscapes. A graduate of New Mexico State University and trained in photography at the University of New Mexico, Groves developed a style that emphasized natural light, expansive composition, and the quiet majesty of the arid American Southwest. His work frequently featured the Organ Mountains, the Mesilla Valley, and scenes along the Rio Grande, capturing both the geological drama and the serene stillness of the region.
Groves exhibited widely throughout New Mexico, with many of his pieces shown and sold through his own gallery in historic Old Mesilla. His signed works from the 1980s and 1990s remain sought after for their regional authenticity and artistic clarity, particularly among collectors of Western and landscape photography.
