Description

When we asked artist Karon Ohm if she might be willing to donate to 1CaT, she responded, “What a great cause! My late husband Cy rescued so many feral cats, and I think he would haunt me if I didn’t donate. … Thanks for helping those kitties.”

Several years ago, a local gallery owner asked Karon for some small glass strips for use in vases and potted plants. From these small fused glass sculptural pieces her  "totems" – fused glass sculptures and wall art – were introduced. Karon creates a strip of glass by fusing (melting) together several pieces of glass in a kiln at ~1200-1500°F. She then adheres that fused glass piece to a narrower strip of aluminum, and the aluminum sticks into the ground. This particular piece of Karon’s is meant to be outdoors, and the elements should be no problem. She even leaves hers outside in Wisconsin all winter! Check out the closeup photos to see details of Karon's art. The price of this cool and striking glass garden stake would be $78 at our Cloudcroft, NM gift shop/gallery Off the Beaten Path.

About the Artist:

Karon Ohm, Fish Creek, WI

Karon Ohm established her studio in 2010, and hasn’t looked back. Her studio actually is a collection of different studios that invite people to come in and play and create their own art. Whether it be ceramics and pottery, mosaics, painting, metal sculpture, or glass fusing, Karon believes that making art should be a fun process and be accessible to everyone. She enjoys the creative process, and loves to share her fun and colorful art with others. A favorite quote of hers is from Albert Einstein, “Creativity is intelligence having fun.” What once was an abandoned farm now is home for Karon, her studios, business, and a variety of animals including two pygmy goats, a pot belly pig, duck, cats and her dog Wilson.
