Leonel Lopez Saenz Mata Ortiz Olla – Sgraffito Lizard Design, 5.5" x 8"
This beautifully hand-coiled olla is by renowned Mata Ortiz ceramicist Leonel Lopez Saenz, celebrated for his dynamic sgraffito carving and imaginative animal motifs. Originating from the artisan-rich village of Mata Ortiz in Chihuahua, Mexico, Lopez Saenz brings ancient Paquimé pottery techniques into a modern narrative through his refined craftsmanship.
The wide-bodied, low-profile form features a rich interplay of red and white geometric linework, meticulously etched to create hypnotic visual symmetry. Surrounding the body are multiple stylized black lizards—each one unique—carved within textured medallions. The underside of one lizard bears the incised signature “Leonel Lopez Saenz,” affirming its authenticity.
Leonel Lopez Saenz, active since the early 1990s, is part of the second wave of Mata Ortiz artisans. His works are recognized for their blend of ancestral symbolism and contemporary artistry, making this olla a compelling addition to folk art and Southwestern collections.
Condition
In good condition, exhibiting minor surface wear consistent with age and handling. There are light scratches and scuff marks, particularly along the base, but no cracks or structural damage. The etched designs remain crisp and vivid, retaining their visual appeal.
