From the studio of metal sculptor, Chris Turri, emerges a new line of mixed media work from the shadows of the metal sculptures and the stories of another life and time. Available in a very limited series, collectors can experience the alchemy of Chris Turri in a new medium – patina on cloth. 

While applying the patina on his metal art, Chris uses reclaimed cloth in which to wrap the metal. While the metal is chemically changing in his special “bath”, a natural transfer process occurs, and the patina is rendered onto the cloth. The resulting creation is a rendition of the metalwork on the cloth. Visible within the cloth fibers are the images of ancient petroglyphs that Chris has cut into his metal.

This one-of-a-kind patina on cloth entitled "Vision Quest" was created by our dear friend and amazingly talented Corrales artist Chris Turri. Another sweet friend, Judy Rabon, purchased this wonderful piece a few years ago when we last had an art show for Chris at our Cloudcroft gift shop/gallery Off the Beaten Path. After some renovations, Judy had nowhere for this large piece of Chris’s, and she was extremely kind and generous to donate it to help 1CaT. Thank you, Judy!

This means that if the reserve price is not met during the bidding process, “Vision Quest” will be sold for a set price at Off the Beaten Path in the next few months.

"From Chris Turri’s early years as a silversmith and tradesman, Chris’s creative capabilities were apparent in all aspects of his life. In 2006 Chris went into his studio full time to redirect his artist focus, fabricating sculpture from new and reclaimed metals and developing his “special sauces” to create unique patinas on copper and steel. Transforming the “skins” of old vehicles – 1940’s, '50’s & '60’s – Chris uncovers the elements in the metal that tell stories from another time and brings a richness and deeper character to the work.

Throughout his life Chris has scoured the desert for the memories of those who lived before. Native cultures hold a special place deep inside, so he gratefully borrows some of the iconic imagery of indigenous peoples and blends them with universal symbols and materials of a more recent time.  Chris’s abstractly figurative sculptures are a contemporary expression of the harmony in diversity. 

Through the process of exploring textures and the alchemy of his patinas, Chris recently developed a line of mixed media art — patina on cloth. The new work was born from the shadows of his metal sculptures and the stories they tell.

In Chris’s metal work he repurposes a variety of unusual metals. So too, Chris utilizes reclaimed cloth that comes from the shadows of the lives of others. The patina on cloth pieces are wrapped on large canvases bringing a fresh new medium while relying on the imagery and stories of the past."
