Description

University of New Mexico Steamer Trunk – Peacock Luggage Shop, c.1920s

This vintage steamer trunk, likely from the 1920s–30s, is marked “University of New Mexico” in bold red lettering, suggesting it was used by a student or faculty member. The initials “J.M.C.” are stenciled on the lid, possibly indicating the original owner. Constructed with reinforced black-painted wood and metal fittings, the trunk features a partial destination label and retains its original printed paper lining. Inside, a factory label from Peacock Luggage Shop, Los Angeles, proclaims it as “Practically Indestructible.”

Steamer trunks like this were popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, coinciding with the boom era of sea and road travel by steam-powered ships and trains . They were essential for holding valuables and clothing during extended journeys. This piece serves as a decorative accent or collectible item, reflecting the travel and educational history of the era.

Condition

In good, stable condition overall, with notable wear from age and use. The exterior shows chipped paint, oxidation to hardware, and scattered dents. The lock mechanism has been removed, and both side handles and interior tray are absent. Despite cosmetic wear, the trunk remains sturdy and retains vintage charm.
