"Compass Rose", Etched Brass Ornament by Teresa Mowery View Watchlist >
Teresa Mowery was very kind to donate five of her copper or brass ornaments to help 1CaT, and we are very grateful! Unfortunately, Teresa no longer creates her cool ornaments, so these now are all collector’s items! Each ornament is handcrafted of brass or copper, and is hand-finished with a sealant that protects and preserves the color, luster, and sheen of the piece. This particular ornament is a representation of the Compass Rose, a nautical device used by sailors since the 12th century. Etched along the edge of the ornament is a quote by Oliver W. Holmes: “The great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving. We must sail sometimes with the wind, and sometimes against it. But we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor.“ The value of this collector’s item ornament is $25.
About the Artist:
Teresa Mowery, Tiverton, RI
Teresa Mowery designs and creates from the heart and hand. She is a metalsmith specializing in copper, where she uses chemistry and patinas to create unique, nature-inspired designs. As Teresa explains, “My work is deeply influenced by fractal patterns, microscopic imagery, and the natural aging of objects, as well as the beauty of local wildlife and landscapes. I document these inspirations and translate them into my art, focusing on the interplay of color, texture, and geometry to evoke a sense of timelessness and wonder.” Her foundation in art began with formal training as a jeweler, earning a BFA from the Maine College of Art in 1992. “This background instilled a strong sense of design that continues to shape my work.”
