Tarahumara Clay Olla with Rawhide Strapping — 21” Handcrafted Vessel
This traditional clay olla originates from the Tarahumara (Rarámuri) people of northern Mexico, renowned for their utilitarian yet artful ceramic craftsmanship. Shaped by hand using coil construction and open firing, the vessel displays a warm reddish-brown surface with natural tonal variations and fire markings.
Its ovoid body is reinforced with a distinctive pattern of rawhide strapping, serving both structural and practical purposes. This rugged harness system allows for secure handling, transport, or suspension—common in rural, mountainous environments. Such vessels were typically used for storing water, grains, or fermenting tesgüino, a ceremonial corn beer central to Tarahumara culture.
With its bold form and cultural authenticity, this large olla offers strong appeal to collectors of indigenous art and rustic decorative wares alike.
