1940s–50s Shipman Stamp Vending Machine — With Keys
Remember stamps? This vintage postage stamp vending machine, crafted by Shipman MFG Co. of Los Angeles during the heyday of handwritten letters. With bold enamel graphics in classic red, white, and blue, this compact machine dispensed 2¢ and 3¢ stamps—priced for 5¢ and 10¢ coins respectively—when mailing a letter or postcard was part of everyday life.
Dating from the 1940s–1950s, it reflects a nostalgic era when sending a message home was both affordable and intentional. Featuring the original dual coin slots, lever pulls, and the Shipman sailboat emblem, it evokes the feel of corner shops, post offices, and quiet lobbies across mid-century America.
Sturdily built and fully functional in form, this machine can be either wall-mounted or displayed on a countertop, making it adaptable for collectors, decorators, and vintage enthusiasts alike. It includes two original keys and retains its interior mechanisms, making it a rare and desirable piece of postal history.
Condition:
Good vintage condition with expected age-related wear. There is a noticeable chip in the enamel at the top left corner, along with light surface scuffing, oxidation on exposed metal, and tape residue on the sides. The original mechanisms appear intact, and both keys are included. Presents well overall with strong visual character.
Size:
13.75 x 6.5 x 5.75 inches (Height x Width x Depth)
Weight: 9 lb 8 oz
Soup can in photo for scale.
