Pair of NY Chair Folding Sling Chairs – Wood Arms, Canvas Seats
Pair of original NY Chair folding lounge chairs designed by Takeshi Nii, Japan, circa 1958. These iconic chairs feature rust-red canvas slings suspended within tubular steel frames, complemented by 1.75" turned beechwood arms. Their elegant, foldable design offers both functionality and style, hallmarks of postwar Japanese modernism with a Scandinavian influence.
Each chair retains the original affixed label near the rear frame, identifying the maker and confirming provenance. Lightweight yet structurally sound, they fold flat for convenient storage. A celebrated example of 20th-century design, the NY Chair is part of MoMA’s permanent collection and remains sought-after by collectors worldwide.
Condition
Good vintage condition with visible signs of use. Both chairs show light scuffing and wear to canvas and wood. One chair displays a 3-inch discolored area on the backrest canvas. Frames remain stable and functional. See images for details.
