Whitall Tatum Apothecary Bottles & Mortar Set — HNO₃ 1883 Patent, 4 oz
This antique apothecary set comprises two glass bottles and a glass mortar with pestle, reflecting late 19th to early 20th-century pharmaceutical practices.
The first bottle, labeled “MIST: FER: SULPHAS. (1x8)”, stands 10" tall with stopper and was used for iron sulfate mixtures. The second bottle, etched with “CONC ACID NITRIC HNO₃”, measures 7" tall and features a stopper embossed with “HNO₃, Pat May 1, 1883”, referencing a patent by chemist Frank Fanning Jewett. Both bottles are marked “W.T.Co U.S.A”, indicating manufacture by the Whitall Tatum Company .
The accompanying 4 oz glass mortar, marked “4.Oz C”, includes a 5" pestle and features a pour spout. This set offers a glimpse into historical laboratory equipment and would be a valuable addition to any collection of medical or scientific antiques.
Condition:
Overall good condition with age-appropriate wear. The sulphate bottle has mineral deposits, and its stopper is currently immobile. The nitric acid bottle's etching remains clear. The mortar and pestle show signs of use, including a ½" chip on the rim and minor deposits, but no structural cracks.

- Sulphas Bottle (with Stopper): 10" H x 4" W
- Nitric Acid Bottle: 7" H x 2.5" W
- Mortar (with Pour Spout): 2.75" H x 4" W x 4.5" D
