Description

Lou Zansky 1963 “Negro Girl” — Oil on Masonite, Signed & Framed

A 1963 oil on masonite by American artist Lou Zansky (1920–1978), titled Negro Girl. Created at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, this work emerges from a period when New York City was a hub of social and political activism. The painting presents a contemplative female figure, rendered in rich, layered tones of ochre, crimson, green, and umber. Zansky's use of impasto and palette knife techniques gives the surface a compelling texture and emotional resonance.

Signed Zansky at the lower right and inscribed on the verso with the full title and date. Housed in a period giltwood frame with a warm, aged crackled finish, the painting is displayed without glazing to allow full appreciation of its tactile surface.

Artist Biography:
Born in the Bronx to Russian Jewish immigrants, Lou Zansky began his artistic journey illustrating for The Magpie, DeWitt Clinton High School's literary magazine. In the early 1940s, he contributed to the Classics Illustrated series, adapting literary works like Moby Dick, Don Quixote, and The Deerslayer into comic form. Transitioning to fine art in the 1960s, Zansky developed a semi-abstract style, often exploring human figures and social themes.

Condition Report:
In good condition. The paint surface is stable, with no flaking, repairs, or damage. The impasto texture is intentional and original to the artist’s technique. The frame shows light wear consistent with age but remains solid and attractive.
