Description

Kutani Black & Gold Hand-Painted Tea Set — 18 Pcs, Marked

This 18-piece Japanese tea set exemplifies the refined artistry of Kutani ware, renowned for its vivid colors and intricate overglaze designs. The set features a striking matte black ground adorned with hand-painted gold landscape scenes, including temples, trees, and mountains, reflecting the traditional motifs of the Kutani style.

Kutani ware originated in the mid-17th century in the Kaga region (now Ishikawa Prefecture) and is celebrated for its bold use of color and elaborate designs. The pieces in this set bear Kutani marks, indicating their connection to this esteemed ceramic tradition. The use of gold over a dark background is characteristic of certain Kutani styles developed during the Meiji period, aimed at both domestic appreciation and export appeal .

This set includes a teapot, sugar bowl, three teacups, six 7-inch plates, six 5-inch plates, and a lidded vase, making it both a functional tea service and a display-worthy collection.

Condition:
In good condition overall, with moderate signs of use. Some surface wear and minor scuffs, especially to the vase, along with visible crazing. Wear to gilt detailing in areas, but the design remains intact and visually striking.

  • Teapot (with lid and spout): 5 x 5 x 7.5 inches (H x D x W)
