Pair of Navajo Turtle Sculptures – R. Yabeny Signed 1993 & Horse Hair Pottery
Offered as a pair, these Navajo (Diné) ceramic turtle sculptures showcase two distinct styles of Native American pottery from the American Southwest. One piece is signed and dated by R. Yabeny (1993), featuring bold hand-painted black and turquoise geometric motifs over a slip-cast form. The second turtle, unsigned, is executed in the horse hair pottery technique, with a rich marbled finish and dynamic sgraffito-engraved patterns in warm desert hues of red, black, and ochre.
Both pieces are crafted using slip mold casting and finished by hand, highlighting the blend of traditional Navajo techniques with contemporary artistry. The expressive shapes and intricate surface work make them excellent display pieces for collectors of Indigenous pottery or Southwestern décor.
Condition:
Both pieces are in good condition. The Yabeny turtle shows some scuffing, wear, and shelf marks; the horse hair example exhibits typical shelf wear but no cracks or structural flaws. Please refer to photos for detail.
Size:
- R. Yabeny Turtle: 3 x 4.75 x 7 inches
- Horse Hair Turtle: 3 x 4.25 x 6.5 inches
