Tom Vail Jr. Navajo Horsehair Piggy Bank – Hand-Etched w/ Turquoise
This handcrafted piggy bank by Navajo artist Tom Vail Jr. exemplifies a powerful blend of traditional craftsmanship and personal expression. A member of the respected Vail family of potters from New Mexico, Vail is known for his use of the horsehair raku technique—where strands of horsehair are applied to red-hot pottery, leaving behind carbon trails that form organic black veining patterns. This method ensures that no two pieces are alike.
Formed from a slip-cast mold and signed “T. Vail Jr.” on the underside, the piggy bank is richly adorned with hand-etched sgraffito designs, revealing the lighter clay beneath a dark slip. These motifs reflect Native cultural symbolism and artistry. Genuine turquoise cabochons are inlaid at key points, enhancing its Southwestern aesthetic. With its stylized form, functional coin slot, and loop handle, this piece serves equally well as decor or a collector’s treasure.
Condition:
In excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or visible flaws. The turquoise inlays are intact, and the etched designs remain crisp. The piece is clean and empty.
Dimensions:
5.5 x 6.5 x 4 inches
