Brass-Inlaid Rosewood Writing Box with Monogrammed Lid
A richly crafted Anglo-Indian writing slope or lap desk, constructed in solid rosewood with ornate brass strapwork and pierced foliate inlays to each corner. The hinged lid features a central brass monogram cartouche and opens to a marbled-paper lined interior with a removable tray lined in dark velvet. Fitted with recessed brass campaign-style carrying handles and flathead screw hardware, the box exemplifies colonial craftsmanship made for portability and presentation—likely originating from Vizagapatam or Bombay.
The interior tray is divided into two compartments, suitable for writing implements or personal effects, and the lock is functional with its original key. A handsome and practical piece that speaks to 19th-century travel culture and British administrative life in India.
Condition:
Good, with surface scuffing and handling wear consistent with age. Approximately 0.5 inch of brass inlay is absent at the top left corner, and a section is lifting slightly at the top right. Brass fittings retain natural patina. The interior is clean and vivid, and the lock functions properly.
Dimensions:
5.25 x 11 x 8.25 inches (Height x Width x Depth)
