Landers Frary & Clark Brass Dial Hanging Scale, 20 lb, c. 1915
Classic American store scale, produced circa 1915–25 by Landers, Frary & Clark, New Britain, Connecticut. The circular spring balance features a 6 ½-inch brass dial engraved with 1-ounce graduations to 20 lb, the maker’s name, and a scarce New York City “Approved – Type 7, Serial E-1” inspection stamp. A blackened-steel pointer, top suspension ring, and forged lower hook complete the rugged, utilitarian design, all housed in a steel bezel with original glass crystal. Intended for butchers and produce merchants, it now offers both functional accuracy and industrial charm—ideal for kitchen décor, farm-stand display, or trade-tool collections. Harder-to-find Type 7 examples seldom appear at auction—bid confidently on this piece of mercantile history.
Condition
Good, unrestored condition: dial shows attractive tarnish, scattered scratches, and two small rubbed patches; numerals and approval stamp remain clear. Pointer retains most black finish with speckled oxide pitting; steel bezel, ring, and hook display stable surface rust and age darkening. Pointer advances smoothly under light load but has not been professionally calibrated.
