Junghans ATO Brass & Glass Electric Clock — Mid-Century German Design
A vintage Junghans ATO electric clock from mid-century Germany. Housed in a transparent glass case with a removable front cover, the clock showcases its electro-mechanical movement, a hallmark of Junghans' design during this era. The brass and glass construction reflects the minimalist aesthetic popular in the 1950s and 1960s.
The clock is marked “Junghans ATO – Made in Germany” and bears serial number 518521, with an additional engraving 53533 on the underside of the base. A brass plaque indicates it was previously serviced by Canales Custom Watch & Jewelry, Fort Bliss, Texas. It operates on a dry cell battery (size #8 or #9), and includes one currently installed (non-functioning).
Junghans, established in 1861 in Schramberg, Germany, was renowned for its precision timepieces and innovative designs. The ATO series, developed under license from French engineer Léon Hatot, introduced electromagnetic movements that were cutting-edge at the time.
This timepiece is a testament to Junghans' commitment to blending form and function, making it a desirable addition for collectors of vintage clocks or enthusiasts of mid-century modern design.
Condition
In fair to good condition with visible surface oxidation to the brass elements and wear on the clock face. The battery is present but dead, and the unit remains untested. Glass panels show minor scuffs but are intact, and the removable cover fits properly. Offered as-is for display or potential restoration.
