Description

Frederic Remington “The Mountain Man” Bronze Sculpture – 29” on Marble Base

A commanding bronze sculpture titled “The Mountain Man” by Frederic Remington (American, 1861–1909), modeled after his iconic 1903 design. This piece captures a solitary frontiersman on horseback descending a steep, craggy slope—one of the most dramatic and technically ambitious compositions in Remington’s body of work. The sculpture is finely cast in dark patinated bronze and mounted on a polished green marble base with a brass title plaque.

The casting bears Remington’s signature and the copyright inscription “Copyright 1903 by Frederic Remington” molded into the base. While no Roman Bronze Works stamp is visible, the sculpture aligns closely with authenticated editions in scale and detail. The total height is approximately 29 inches including the base, suggesting the bronze alone is consistent with the original 27–28" casts held in major museum collections such as The Met and Amon Carter Museum.

Executed in the lost-wax tradition, the piece exhibits excellent surface detail and fluidity—from the trapper’s flowing buckskins and fur cap to the tension in the horse’s cautious descent. It embodies the courage and hardship of the American frontier and remains one of the most enduring icons in Western sculpture.

Condition:

In good condition overall. The bronze surface displays a consistent dark patina with only minor rubbing to raised areas. The green marble base shows light edge wear and surface abrasions consistent with handling and display. No structural issues are present, and the sculpture is stable and well-mounted. Signature and copyright inscriptions are clearly legible.
