Tannia Smith Navajo Horsehair Pottery Vase — Hand Etched & Painted
This signed vase by Tannia Smith, a contemporary Navajo (Diné) potter, showcases the traditional horsehair firing method blended with hand-painted and etched Southwest motifs. Mold-cast and finished by hand, the piece features stepped and spiral geometric designs in warm desert tones of red, green, and white. During firing, strands of horsehair are applied to the surface, leaving behind distinctive carbonized smoke lines unique to each piece. Smith’s work is prized for its combination of traditional technique and graphic detail. Signed “Tannia – Navajo” on the base, this is a beautiful example of modern Native American ceramic artistry.
