Owl Kachina by Dave & Martha Nelson — Hopi-Style, Navajo-Made, 15"
Signed by Dave & Martha Nelson, this hand-carved Owl Kachina is a striking example of Navajo craftsmanship executed in the traditional Hopi style. Representing the Mongwa (Owl) spirit—symbol of wisdom and a ceremonial guardian—the figure features detailed carving, expressive painted features, and rich adornments in natural materials including feathers, leather, fur, shell, and faux grass.
Standing 15 inches tall, the kachina displays a dynamic dancing pose with raised leg and outstretched rattle, accented by shell bells and a feathered crest. The Nelsons, active in the mid-to-late 20th century, are recognized for producing collector-market kachinas in traditional styles using materials and motifs drawn from ceremonial Hopi iconography.
This piece is Navajo-made and not intended for ceremonial use, but it honors the visual language of authentic Hopi kachinas, making it a desirable addition for collectors of Native-inspired Southwestern art.
