Bakabi Kachada Hopi Mudhead Kachina — Removable Mask, Signed, 1980s
A striking example of late 20th-century Native American craftsmanship, this hand-carved Hopi Mudhead (Koyemsi) Kachina doll is signed and stamped by Bakabi Kachada, a documented Native American artist active during the 1980s. Crafted in the U.S.A. and marked accordingly, this figure features a removable mudhead mask and is constructed from hand-painted wood with detailed applications of fur, feathers, leather, and vinyl accents.
The Mudhead (or Koyemsi) is a significant ceremonial figure in Hopi tradition, known for humor and ritual role-playing during seasonal dances. This figure includes a well-balanced mix of traditional materials and folk design, with white-spotted limbs, stylized facial paint beneath the mask, and carefully applied costume details.
The underside of the base reads: “The Mud Head Clown” and bears a copyright range of 1984–1987 with a "Patent Pending 1984" stamp—hallmarks of Bakabi Kachada’s production period.
Condition:
In good condition overall, with some surface wear consistent with age. The feathers on the removable mudhead mask are absent, and minor signs of handling are visible. The figure stands securely and the mask fits well.
