C.W. Tom Hopi “Early Morning Singer” Kachina – Hand Carved, Signed, Masked
This finely handcrafted Hopi Kachina doll titled “Early Morning Singer” is signed by C.W. Tom, a recognized Native American carver known for detailed kachina figures. The piece depicts Talavai, or the Morning Singer, a spirit associated with ceremonial songs at dawn—often seen in pairs on rooftops during the Hopi Powamuya (Bean Planting Ceremony).
Carved from wood and hand-painted, the figure stands in a dynamic dance posture with a removable turquoise mask, complete with cylindrical mouth projection and painted symbols. The doll is richly adorned with real fur, feathers, and soft leather garments, capturing both cultural symbolism and tactile craftsmanship. White pigment markings on the body echo ceremonial body paint, while the figure holds traditional instruments in each hand.
A collectible and culturally significant example of Southwest Native art, this piece merges Hopi spiritual tradition with the artistry of Navajo or Hopi-influenced craftsmanship by C.W. Tom. Suitable for display or scholarly collection, it highlights both form and function in kachina ceremonial representation.
Condition:
In good condition with no signs of damage. Paintwork is vibrant and well-preserved. All attached materials—including fur, leather, and feathers—remain intact and show only minor handling wear. The removable mask fits snugly and displays cleanly.
