Native American Mudhead Gourd Figure – Signed D Wills, Feathers & Shell
A bold and expressive Native American-style gourd sculpture, signed on the underside: “MD MUDHEAD D Wills” (possibly “Dwells”). Drawing inspiration from the Hopi Koyemsi, or Mudhead clown/spirit figures, this handcrafted piece is constructed from two joined natural gourds, adorned with leather, feathers, shell, beads, and antler.
The sculptural form features multiple rounded spouts protruding from the upper gourd, echoing the traditional Mudhead mask. The front is richly decorated with a fringe of layered feathers, accented by beads and a painted shell medallion depicting a stylized Thunderbird-like figure. Earth-toned and highly textured, the piece evokes ceremonial symbolism while retaining a contemporary folk-art character.
The artist’s signature and visual style suggest a Southwestern regional influence, likely a modern artisan interpretation rooted in indigenous themes. A one-of-a-kind collector’s item for those drawn to Native-inspired or ethnographic art.
Condition
In good condition overall, with some surface wear and natural variations to the gourd skin. Feathers are dry and brittle in areas, with minor fraying. No visible cracks or structural damage. Signature remains clear and legible. Please review photos for additional details.
