Serafin Moctezuma Taxco Fish Ring – Sterling Silver & Aventurine, c.1940s
An exceptional and rare vintage Taxco bypass ring by Serafin Moctezuma, c. 1940s–50s. Formed as a sculptural fish, this piece features intricate hand-chased scale and fin detail in sterling silver, with a bezel-set aventurine cabochon in the mouth and small dark stone eyes, likely onyx. The form elegantly wraps the finger, with the fish’s head and tail tapering into an adjustable band. Moctezuma’s conjoined “SM” hallmark is impressed inside the band alongside “Sterling,” typical of his early Taxco workshop markings.
Serafin Moctezuma was one of Taxco’s early independent silversmiths, influenced by the Spratling school and contemporaries like Los Castillo. His stylized animal forms are highly sought after for their originality and fine craftsmanship. This ring exemplifies his signature aesthetic—playful yet refined—and remains an enduring collectible for both Mexican silver and modernist jewelry enthusiasts.
