Navajo Ganado Rug — Handwoven Wool, 40.5" x 28.5", c. 1960s–1980s
The Ganado style, with its bold red fields and commanding geometric forms, is one of the most recognizable traditions of Navajo weaving. This handwoven rug features a vivid red ground dominated by a strong central diamond, flanked by stepped motifs in black, cream, and brown. A serrated border frames the composition, reinforcing the visual rhythm and symmetry for which Ganado textiles are admired.
The roots of the Ganado tradition trace back to the late 19th century and trader J.L. Hubbell, who encouraged Navajo weavers to refine their use of red and black into bold, symmetrical designs. These patterns became so distinctive that “Ganado Red” is still considered a cornerstone of Navajo textile artistry. This example, dating from the mid-20th century (c. 1960s–1980s), carries forward that legacy with clarity of line and tight construction, reflecting the skill of a practiced hand.
This rug is ideally sized for wall display or as a refined accent piece. Its dramatic palette and balanced design make it equally at home in a traditional Southwestern setting or a modern interior. Collectors will recognize this weaving not only as a decorative textile but also as a continuation of one of the most influential movements in Navajo weaving history.
