Miguel Bugarini Mata Ortiz Pottery Jar – Hand-Coiled Polychrome, 15"
This impressive hand-coiled and painted pottery jar is by Miguel Bugarini, a master potter from Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, Mexico. Bugarini is celebrated for his large-scale vessels and complex polychrome designs inspired by the ancient Paquimé (Casas Grandes) ceramic tradition. This example displays finely executed geometric motifs including stepped frets, checkerboards, and floral medallions, accented with bold red-brown and black paint on a cream ground. The interior features a dynamic arrangement of stylized fish, adding a rare and distinctive element to the design. Signed Miguel Bugarini on the base.
Mata Ortiz pottery has gained international recognition since the mid-20th century, with artisans like Bugarini carrying forward this revival of ancient Puebloan artistry. Measuring 10 inches tall and 15 inches in diameter, this vessel stands out both for its scale and for its vibrant surface detail, making it an excellent centerpiece for collectors of Mata Ortiz art.
