Wheeler & Wilson Carved Oak Sewing Machine Accessory Box
A relic of sewing history, this Wheeler & Wilson wooden accessory box was designed to hold attachments for one of the most innovative sewing machines of the 19th century. Wheeler & Wilson, founded in Bridgeport, Connecticut, were pioneers in the lockstitch design and dominated the sewing world until their merger with Singer in 1905.
The box: solid oak construction with dovetail joinery, a carved lid featuring scrolling foliage, and a central medallion boldly reading “Wheeler & Wilson Sewing Machines.” The interior is lined in rich burgundy velvet, once cradling the precision tools that gave seamstresses a new measure of freedom and speed. Beyond its utility, the box stands as an artifact of industrial design, blending craftsmanship with branding in a way that is as captivating now as it was over a century ago.
Condition
Good condition overall. Scuffing, shelf wear, chips along edges, and imperfections to the wood consistent with age. The burgundy velvet lining shows discoloration, and the original key is absent. Hinges are intact, and carved lid remains clear and well defined.
